Staged by Ringerike Municipality, the competition called for the design of a pilot neighborhood which embraces sustainability in its broadest sense.

Spanning a 60 ha strategic site, our proposal is rooted in principles of care for the environment and each other, sharing of available resources and amenities, and self-sustaining life through closed consumption loops to promote resilient, local production, and a circular economy considerate of the impact of industrial-grade agriculture and non-native crop production.

In designing for uncertainty, we find the fundamental laws of a livable future: Care, Share, and Self-Sustain.

Wearable Architecture is an ongoing applied research and investigation on the topic of Non-Developable and Complex Manifold Geometries in Light-Weight Construction coordinated by Marziah Zad and Mohsen Marizad. It is a collective of artists, designers, coders, and fabricators who explore the intersection of architecture, technology, and the human body. It is a creative space that investigates how we connect with ourselves, what we wear, other people, and the broader environment. The extension of human anatomy and the fluidity of movement through inter-connections.

For the production process, it was explored the application of minimal surface structures into wearable pieces. With a focus on prototyping and fabrication techniques, such as triangles stripes of the double curvature surfaces, and the unrolling process from 3D to flat-ready-to-laser-cut pieces.

The wearable pieces were also used for the ‘’Art of Connection’’ photography project which has been published on Paper Magazine and awarded in the Cherrydeck Creators Awards. The project explores the role of our clothing as a shelter that protects and connects, presenting a delicate interplay of social interaction, environmental empathy, and human connection during a time when the forced absence of such connections is particularly distressing.

Partizan Multi-purpose Sports Hall is a competition project in Skopje, North Macedonia. The proposal included: the revitalization of one of the most important historical sports hall of the city, the creation of a public park to reconnect the site with the neighbourhood and the restoration of the iconic Kiosk K67 to create an open market for local and organic producers. The main goal of this design was to preserve and magnify the existent brutalist structure and its memory in the social context.

The work was a collaboration among Mateus Sartori, Tomás Romero Talley and Javier Romero, with the support of NGO Cultural Echoes.

MARIA FUMAÇA LIGHT TRAIL TRAIN STATION

My final project design at university was a new transportation hub in a countryside city in Brazil with a developing economy and a tourist attraction. The work creates a light-rail station in the city of Bento Gonçalves, and it’s based on an official study of Technical, Economic, Financial, Social and Environmental Viability, a study funded by the Brazilian government from the program to revitalize old abandoned train stations. The site chosen it’s located in the center of the city and next to the current heritage train station called Maria Fumaça, a tourist trip with old Italian traditions showcased because of its immigration background.

Ephemeral site-specific. Local botany placed in facades in the urban context of Hostafrancs, Barcelona.

It is a self-healing tool.

It was created based on my lockdown experiences of having to avoid and expel negative thoughts running in a circular and endless mode.

Atravesar el paisaje

En un camino empedrado, que copia el sinuoso recorrido del río Ebro, entre viñedos, un horizonte de montañas y enfrentados a los antiguos restos de un puente, un objeto exótico y singular se posa en él. Un pasaje ondulante para atravesar el paisaje, que invita al visitante a jugar con su curiosidad; y adentrarse en un recorrido que va generando pausas y ofreciendo nuevos puntos de vista para contemplar el lugar. Pasaje Paisaje ondula sobre el suelo y su piel de madera nos deja ver de a ratos el exterior. Como un puente abandonado, que no conduce a lugar ninguno más que a la propia experiencia de ser atravesado, esta instalación es un paréntesis en el camino, que como en un pasaje literario, nos transporta hacia otro lugar para luego ya sobre el final, dejarnos seguir nuestro camino.

Patrimonio natural

La instalación se integra con el entorno paisajístico y ecológico valorando el carácter del viñedo y la importancia del patrimonio natural y biológico del área. La contemplacion de las montañas, del río Ebro, del puente histórico, de la vitivinicultura presente y también la ornitología abarcan todos los elementos presentes en La Rioja.

Memoria constructiva

Pasaje Paisaje es una instalación temporal, con estructura auto-portante de vigas reticuladas de madera reforestada y revestimiento exterior de láminas de tablero contrachapado de madera. Consta de tres apoyos, en ambos extremos y otro en el tramo medio.

Se trata de un pasaje que se dispone longitudinal al camino y en su interior contiene una serie de escaleras que generan un recorrido ascendente y descendente; con una piel exterior de láminas de madera que van variando la apertura dejando entrever, a quien lo recorre, el paisaje exterior.

Materialidad

La estructura está realizada con un reticulado modular de madera reforestada y cepillada de sección 2x4’’ (10x5cm), que se arma en partes en el taller, y se monta en el sitio, con uniones metálicas, atornilladas y abulonadas a la madera. Los escalones están hechos a partir de lo tableros contrachapados Laudio Pine provistos. La piel exterior está realizada con láminas de madera, realizadas también con tableros contrachapados Laudio Pine cortados en fresadora CNC. Todos los elementos irán pintados en color negro mate con pintura ecológica. Se prioriza el uso de materiales sostenibles.

Montaje

La estructura estará dividida en 2 tramos que serán realizados en el taller y que serán montados en el sitio, no se prevé la utilización de grúas para el montaje. Los escalones serán realizados en taller también y serán colocados una vez la estructura esté montada.

Posteriormente se colocarán las láminas de madera que irán fijadas a la estructura con uniones metálicas.

Cuantías

Se utilizarán aproximadamente 160 m lineales de madera para la estructura. 26 tableros contrachapados para la piel exterior, más 10 para los escalones. Se precisarán por tanto, 3 tableros adicionales a los 33 provistos por la organización.

Layout de corte

Para realizar la piel se cortarán 26 tableros contrachapados minimizando el desperdicio de material.

Se cortarán 118 piezas de madera reforestada de 10 x 5 cm de sección.

Pos-domesticidades para la Pos-pandemia

En momentos donde los espacios públicos vieron cuestionada su razón de ser, donde las calles se vaciaron de personas, y la forma en que vivimos en las ciudades ha sido puesta en tela juicio. La Casa Plaza es una respuesta a la necesidad de reencontrarnos con la ciudad, en la vuelta a una nueva normalidad. Es una instalación que imagina los espacios públicos de la ciudad como extensión de los hogares, transformando temporalmente la plaza en uno, donde se explora, desde la domesticidad, la aparente dicotomía entre lo público y lo privado, entre lo que hacemos como individuos y lo que hacemos como colectivo. Busca repensar los espacios públicos, desde nuestras experiencias domésticas y afectivas, como respuesta a la necesaria nueva relación de estos con los ciudadanos, entendiendo el rol fundamental que tienen. En hogares cada vez más pequeños y más fragmentados, se necesita más y mejor espacio público, como el agente cohesionador de las ciudades.

La Casa Plaza reinterpreta la planta de una hipotética casa-patio, sus estancias crean espacios de encuentro, y sus muros, bancos públicos. La instalación propone abrir la casa y cerrar su patio, en una inversión de roles que busca generar nuevos diálogos, crear situaciones, y generar encuentros inesperados.

Every wall was a proposal made for the Concrentico Festival of Logrono in the 2019 edition. This installation emerges from the need to break out from our everyday walls. We live in a world full of walls that divide us and try to set us apart. As a provocation, this project tries to show how walls can make our daily path more difficult but at the same time can create unexpected spaces and interactions that we usually do not have.

TOPOGRAPHY TOOL PATH

The idea was based on the concept of landscape and topography formation where the natural behavior mills down earth to create its final shape. The inspiration was my hometown landscape in Brazil, Serra Gaúcha. The surface designed aimed the efficiency of time versus tool path capability.

The goal was to digitally fabricate a Dupin Cyclide 3D shape using a 2D fabrication method. The strategy was oriented triangles stripes, which means it was necessary to rationalize the mesh (in triangles) and the stripping method. Three types of remeshing were created for comparison and analysis reasons: Isotropic Mesh, Design Mesh and Anisotropic Mesh. Also, it was analyzed two types of striping methods with two different plug-ins comparing its metrics.

LA SEINE MUSICALE OPTIMIZATION

The goal was to study the structural timber system applied in Shigeru Ban’s La Seine Musicale. The trihexagonal grid double curved surface is analysed and afterwards applied in a new shape; a cut Dupin Cyclide. Initially the building was deeply analysed and studied, resulting in a clear understanding about the Kagome mesh and how it was applied in La Seine Musicale. Secondly, we applied our acquired knowledge on another surface, providing two different experimental meshes with different construction process. The final result was afterwards optimized and metrics were created to have a better foundation on choosing the best option. After analyzing La Seine Musicale and getting the metrics out of it we aim to implement it into another surface, a cut base Dupin Cyclide. For this we used two adaptation strategy.

ENTER THE VOID was designed as a proposal for the Insolit Festival 2019 in Mallorca, Spain. The theme was ‘‘contradiction’’ and by filling an empty space with vertical elements it was created this aspect of empty versus full. The height of the sticks are distributed to create a invisible volume as well as a crossing path and contemplation spaces. Generative tools were used for the overall design as well as a straightforward construction scheme.

DONA ALZIRA METRO STATION

This project consists of a metro station overground and two urban infrastructure to serve as access to the station and for the population living in the area. The cover of the station ins based in a parametric shape with a truss structure.

This project’s process was divided in three parts. Part 1 - to research and learn from Miguel Fisac’s building Centro de Estudos Hidrograficos in Madrid, Spain. The focus was on the concrete technique of the beam structure and on taking it further with new explorations. Part 2 - it was analyzed Matadero building as a good example of well working cultural center, since the Conde Duque lacked functionality. Part 3 - the combination of a new concrete beam technique and the conclusion from the site analysis and from Madrid’s context created a new design for the Conde Duque Cultural Centre.

During the Master in Parametric Design in Architecture 2018 held at ETSAV (UPC) students participated on a series of workshops focused on form-finding as a tool to explore the capacity of bending-active structures to create lightweight structures with a controlled curvature.

A design competition was held in which seven groups of students explored bending-active techniques in order to design a 6-meter diameter dome using a combination of experimental modeling and parametric design. This with aims of achieving a lightweight, feasible, transportable and resilient structure while controlling a constant curvature. Three of the seven proposals were chosen to be built to scale. The students that participated in the other four projects were split up between the three winning proposals in order to participate in a collaborative assembly of the domes. The three groups were divided into expert subgroups that elaborated on the structural analysis, material testing, detailing and construction of each project.

The Elastic Dome was a proposal for a spherical pavilion using the technique of gridshell or elastic gridshell during the Studio 02 of MPDA. The goal was to generate the most spherical dome with the most lightweight and resistant structure. The concept came out from the elastica curvature definition and several iterations and variations were developed being in the end one chose for final presentation. Membrane tests and explorations were also developed. In the end it was decided to built up another project and there I assisted during the whole fabrication process until the final assembly of the Loop Pavilion.

Based on Chebyshev nodes it was created a flat grid on the floor with glass-fibre rods and metallic connectors, being erected among all the students.

Structural behavior was calculated with the help of Grasshopper and K2Eng.

FOLD was a design project coordinate while I was working at Indissoluble. The brief was to create a show display for the brand Sorel.

The concept started as the idea of having a long stripe of material (thermoplastic resins) and a sequence of folding actions would take and create height, twists and folds.

Experimentation of the folding process was practiced until the client was pleased with the final result which was fabricated in the office atelier.

Ephemeral display of Columbia’s new clothing line separated into three sections: footwear, winter sports, and outdoor. Designed, fabricated in the studio factory and asembled in Sitges Terramar Hotel.

The Pompa Collection was inspired by the costumes of Triadisches Ballet by OskarSchlemmer, specifically one look which used spheres as the main geometrical shape. The intention was to reinterpret that aesthetics through 3D digital design, with new materials and machines for its construction. The technology for this project included 3D printing and thermofoming of plastic materials.

The recent rise of industrial robots and 3D printing to architectural production has given rise to a new language of design numerically informed through computation.

In January 2020 the Robotic Inform Workshop was organized by DesignMorphine, coordinated by Kunal Chadha and Eduardo Chamorro, and assisted by Mateus Sartori, Rim Youssef and Ashkan Foroughi.

The intensive course took place in Barcelona at the TMDC facilities and was focused on designing and producing a 1:1 scale prototype of a 3D printed chair through growth generative algorithms.

The growth algorithm is based on natural phenomena produced by organic growth and can be replicated and adjusted using code.

Computer simulations, fabrication rules, and constraints were explained to ensure the feasibility of final furniture pieces.

Kowloon Collection originates from the intersection of architecture, design, and organic urban growth.

Kowloon's urbanization was the densest area in the world and encapsulates authenticity and anarchism with a strong collective identity.

The spontaneous urban development of this walled city created an urban aesthetic of stacked blocks with a large collection of walls, windows, infrastructure materials, and dirt. These features were translated into the accessories collections in order to create very geometrical and dense shapes with a sense of random self-organization.

The creative process involved scripting and generative design with the aid of 3D printing technology to generate the prototypes and later on finished on metallic materials.

The BAU-HATS is a project of fusion between the Bauhaus aesthetics and fashion design led by Betiana Pavón and Mateus Sartori. Inspired by the anniversary of 100 years the accessories were created to unify the modernism principles with the current technologies within the architecture, design and art fields. The Bauhats were based on the main aesthetic and morphological guidelines of the design generated in the Bauhaus, the application of a functional design, in this case head accessories, using the basic geometric shapes (Circle, Square and Triangle) and primary colours (Red, Blue and Yellow). This symbology became the icon of the visual identity of the Bauhaus school. The manufacturing process included the use of laser cutters and the use of materials such as foamed PVC and acrylic, thus generating 2D modules that are integrated into three-dimensional pieces, called portable structures.

These hats were also taught as part of an open workshop and exhibited at the event of the Bauhaus Costume Party at IAAC - Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia.

It is simply the fact of materializing a continuous manner of being in an effortless design production.

MetaMesa is an experimental side table piece made entirely by neon green acrylic. Fabricated with laser cut and manually assembled.

It is all about circles. It is a personal obsession with circles.

This is a conceptual ring design where the circle is applied in the aesthetics and in the whole development process. Circle is the one of the most primitive shape and here it originates from this product - rings are circular. It was created four interactions shapes that play around with the idea that the ring itself is formed and structured purely with circles that touch and intersect each other.

As the name implies, this project is inspired both in concept and morphology, by the Russian Constructivist movement and the so-called "transmission arts". The antennas, reinterpreted as sculptures, transmitters of a Utopian message, were taken as a means of functional artistic expression. "The art created to be built" sought to represent recognizable objects, made based on geometric rigor. As a result, Radio-speakers manifested a three-dimensional and visually auditory, invisible and intangible message.

EXPAND THE SENSES

The mission and vision of this project is focused on manifesting the sonority of the invisible in a performance act, expressing our increased perception. Our experience with the environment is limited by our own biology: our senses, they function as inputs that our brain decodes into information that makes our perception of things. Radio frequencies are part of an environment that constantly crosses us but is invisible and inaudible. Including technology and electronics in this project, allows us to receive these waves, transform them into data and at the same time with the user's auditory and intuitive interpretation to generate totally random musical sounds as output, a performative act that will always be different since it depends on the surrounding radio frequencies at the time.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Radio communication is the technology that enables the transmission of signals through the modulation of electromagnetic waves. These waves do not require a physical means of transport, so they can propagate through vacuum. Radiorator helmet is a wearable that allows to hear the radio frequencies of the broad spectrum. With an antenna the user receive the frequencies according to their own movements allowing the possibility to interact with the environment. The radio frequencies are digitally decoded in sounds and images in a Raspberry pi. Those sounds are reinterpreted by the user/performer that process and loop the signals with a kaossilator pro generating experimental ambient music.

The meeting of waters between the blackwater Negro´s River and the pale sand-colored Solimões’ River represents the parallelism we experience individually and collectively. Resilient activism and blind obedience. The inability to express oneself and extreme human self-regeneration.

The stream remains heterogeneous.

The piece expresses the dynamics in which the author experienced with his partner, where the two streams followed the same path however, they felt and expressed themselves differently, reaching moments of mental confusion and miscommunication, polarized intensity, and extreme feelings.

The photos chosen by the exposition were taken during a backpack trip thorough Asia where I crossed some countries like Indonesia and Hong Kong. The images capture came from a Polaroid 600 and an Impossible film with colorful borders.
